The Cross can be a grace. Dependent on how we take it, it can make us bitter, but it can also make us better. Suffering can open us for the higher reality of eternal life. It can help us to bring out our best. And -- in union with Jesus -- it is the most privileged instrument for the salvation of the world. Let us not forget, by what means ultimately we were redeemed by our Lord himself. Not by his labor in Nazareth, not by his preaching or healing and not even by his prayer, but by the cross. When He had stretched out his body on the cross in a last act of self-sacrificial love, then a new wellspring of life-giving grace began to flow from his Sacred Heart.
